The other night, after my kids had gone to bed, I walked past the dinner table and saw the scene in the picture above. Captain Hook at the helm of a cardboard classic Chevy. I smiled, then laughed, and thought that it was perfect. I mean, why not? Maybe the old Captain just really wants to take a drive once in a while.
It got me thinking about you. About us. About all of the teachers and educators everywhere. We are four year-olds who let Captain Hook go out for a drive. I mean this in a good way.
Great teachers do not get boxed in by the boundaries of classifications, strategies, and prescribed curriculum. We find a way to think past those lines. We have to. We have to find a way to help our students make connections. We have to help them understand how to understand. We have to help them learn how to learn and then get them to learn on their own. You can’t do this in a box.
We find a way. Creativity is our guide. We blur the lines and cross the borders between teaching and learning and break open the boxes that separate theory and practice. We are teachers, that is what we do, and that is what makes us awesome!
You are awesome! You have what it takes! You are creative and won’t be boxed in. You are amazing and this is why you make a difference! Keep finding ways to let Captain Hook go out on a drive and keep on teaching, Teacher!
PS…Please excuse any mistakes, I typed this one on my phone! 🙂
